IMRU?

I'm reading young adult realism about lesbians for a paper I have to write this weekend, and the narrator of the one I'm currently on just thought to herself "I didn't think we had any gays at this school. Until now." Not in a nasty way, in context, but it got me thinking. If my high school, when I attended, had about 1200 students, that means that (according to the average of 1 in 10 people being some variation of g, l, b or t) there should have been around 120 glbt students. I can only think of maybe 15, including myself, and including some folks whose sexuality I'm only guessing and will probably never verify. Some for sure lesbians, some possible gay boys, a bunch of bi or then-questioning goth girls, and two FTMs. A fairly wide variety, to be sure, but why is it that, from 1997 to 2000, Freedom High School was not a place where you could be openly gay? Why didn't I ever see those other 105 students, and why can I only come up to 15 by speculating about half of them? It's interesting, and maybe a little sad. I wish I could send out a survey to everyone I went to school with: "I'm gay, are you? Sorry we didn't know that about each other. Sorry we might not have even known that about ourselves." I don't want to wait until our 10-year reunion to find these things out.
