Family Picnic
I had a lovely weekend, and I felt the need to tell you all about it. Saturday was my family's annual gathering, appropriately called the Family Picnic. The Picnic is always a good occasion, but this year was particularly exciting because I brought Alex with me. Now, that was a fairly momentous thing, for several reasons. For one, you don't just bring friends to the Picnic. The only non-family attendees allowed are boyfriends and girlfriends. At this point, most of the "cousins" (my generation of the family) who are close to my age are either married, engaged, or bring their current date. So the last few years, I've been feeling a little spinsterish, and a little fat and nerdy, too. But not anymore! I got to bring my vision of a girlfriend and show her off!
And that's just the first reason this was momentous. Not only did I finally have someone to bring, and not only was that someone the ever-lovely Alex, who I adore, but she also made Picnic history by being the first-ever gay girlfriend (or boyfriend, for that matter), and being the second-ever Jew (the first being my dad. does that mean something about my mom's tastes in relation to mine? ugh..). Yay for us!
Happily, the whole family took it very well. Just to give you an idea, this is a crowd of about fifty native New Yorkers, who are all loud and happy and Italian. No small feat for Alex to brave the mass of family members, most of whom didn't even know I was gay until my mother (I'm so damn proud of her) introduced her as "Alex, Rachel's girlfriend." Not a single person made a fuss, and everyone was their usual friendly selves. Naturally, it didn't hurt that Alex made two amazing chocolate mousse pies to bring with us, but they liked her even before they tasted her confections. ;)
So, my family has passed the test. They're apparently all open-minded enough to handle Rachel the Lesbo and her hot girlfriend. Life is good.
